The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has reaffirmed that its mandate is not to determine or appoint the country’s president.
Speaking during a live broadcast of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa emphasized that the Commission’s role is solely to declare the choice of the voters, without influencing the outcome of the election.
She assured the public that the EC will maintain its neutrality and commitment to fairness in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Mensa also urged political parties to avoid spreading misinformation about the EC’s role, clarifying that the Commission has no authority to make anyone president. She stressed the importance of accurate information, reminding all stakeholders that it is the voters, not the EC, who decide the outcome of the election.
Quoting Dr. Hassan Ayariga, Mensa stated, “The EC can never make anybody a president. It’s the Ghanaian voter who votes a president into being, and the EC only declares the voter’s choice. That is what will happen in December 2024. The president declared by the EC will be the one chosen by the voters.”
