22 Candidates Submit Nominations for Dec. 7 Election, 2 Await EC Decision

The Electoral Commission (EC) opened the nomination process for candidates aspiring to contest the December 7 general elections from Monday, September 9, to Friday, September 13, 2024.

By the close of nominations, 22 aspirants had successfully submitted their forms, while two others await the EC’s decision after submitting their forms late.

Among the major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nominated Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has selected former President John Dramani Mahama as its flagbearer.

Other notable candidates include Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and Dr. Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC).

Additional candidates who filed nominations include Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa Sarpong Kumankumah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP). Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) also filed their nominations.

In addition to party candidates, 11 independent candidates, including former NPP member Alan Kyeremanten, who resigned from the party to run independently, are participating. Other independent candidates include Nana Kwame Bediako, Samuel Appiah Danquah, George Twum Barima, Kofi Koranteng, Desmond Abrefa, Nana Stephens, Elder Paul Perkoh, James Kwasi Oppong, John Kpikpi, and Dr. Sam Ankrah. Janet Asana Nabla is the only female independent candidate.

However, two candidates—Dr. Nii Amu Darko (independent) and Kofi Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP)—who filed their nominations after the 5 p.m. deadline on Friday, are awaiting the EC’s decision on whether their nominations will be accepted.

Additionally, Dr. Agnes Ayisha was unable to submit her forms due to difficulties securing endorsements from across all districts. She has appealed to the EC for a resolution to allow her to participate in the elections.

According to Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of operations, all candidates will be informed of their eligibility to contest by Monday at the latest.
