$500m LPG dept has been paid-Mahama

Government has cleared all outstanding gas bills owed to ENI and Vitol, amounting to about $500 million, according to President John Dramani Mahama.

He explained that the full payment means Ghana has met its financial commitments for gas supplied by the Sankofa partners and is no longer in arrears.

Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, Mahama stressed that the country pays for all gas it consumes and has made sufficient allocations in the 2026 Budget to ensure prompt settlement of all future Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) invoices.

The disclosure forms part of a wider list of economic milestones, including Ghana exceeding the $100 billion economic threshold for the first time and the successful repayment of a $500 million guarantee to the World Bank, a move that strengthens the nation’s standing as a dependable global partner.

The President further pointed to improvements in currency performance, noting that the cedi has gained 40.7% against the US dollar, 30.9% versus the British pound, and 24% against the euro.

He stated. “We did more than halt the volatility of the currency; we reinforced the cedi to compete strongly with major international currencies,”
