George Santos Strikes Deal with Feds, Pleads Guilty to Identity Theft and Wire Fraud

Former Congressman George Santos, who was expelled from Congress after facing nearly two dozen criminal charges, has struck a plea deal with federal prosecutors, agreeing to plead guilty to two counts. On Monday, Santos admitted to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

This plea agreement comes just weeks before Santos was scheduled to go to trial in New York, potentially avoiding a lengthy court battle. However, it remains uncertain how the judge will rule at his sentencing.

In court on Monday in Central Islip, NY, Santos confessed to using a campaign donor’s credit cards for personal expenses between September and October 2022. Santos was previously arrested in May 2023 and faced a series of felony charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, making false statements, and lying about his personal finances.

Santos’s sentencing is set for February, where he could face several years in prison.
