President Mahama directs NIB to investigate alleged cash-for-scholarship scheme.

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to launch an immediate and comprehensive probe into claims of financial misconduct in the allocation of government-sponsored overseas scholarships.

The directive, announced by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Fosu, following a discussion in which former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, alleged that a payment was made to secure a foreign scholarship.

In a letter dated February 3, 2026, to the Director-General of the NIB, the Presidency described the allegation as a matter of serious public interest. The statement emphasised that the move aligns with the government’s commitment to accountability, fairness, and transparency in access to educational opportunities.

The Twi-language radio programme generated widespread public reaction, prompting direct intervention from the President.

According to the statement signed by Mr Kwakye Fosu, the NIB has been tasked to urgently examine the claim, verify its accuracy, identify any individuals involved, and establish whether the allegation is substantiated.

The Bureau is expected to submit its findings directly to the President for further consideration and any action deemed necessary. The investigation will also review the procedures and administration of recent overseas scholarship awards under various government programmes.
