Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has vowed to install 50,000 CCTV cameras across major towns in Ghana to bolster security and reduce crime. He made this commitment during a campaign stop in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
Dr. Bawumia explained that a security agency study identified the need for 50,000 CCTV cameras to adequately cover all roads in regional and district capitals. While the government has already begun installing CCTV cameras, not all areas have been reached yet.
In addition to security, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of a “Buy Ghana First” policy to boost local job creation. He believes that increasing the consumption of locally produced goods will help businesses grow and create more employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
During his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia engaged with clergy, imams, and chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area. Former Speaker of Parliament Mike Ocquaye praised Dr. Bawumia, highlighting his intellectual contributions to the party and his pivotal role in addressing election controversies.
Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the achievements of the NPP government and underscored the necessity of enhancing security measures, including the widespread installation of CCTV cameras.
“I asked national security what it would take to have CCTV coverage on all streets in our regional and district capitals so that we can monitor any criminal activity,” he said. “They informed me that 50,000 cameras are needed, and we are committed to providing them to ensure that the police have visibility and can better respond to crime, especially given our limited number of officers.”
