Lawyer indicted for reportedly cheating a US-based nurse of $150,000.

Magdalene Aba Amporful, a 28-year-old lawyer, appeared before an Accra Circuit Court accused of defrauding a US-based nurse of $150,000 under the guise of buying property. She faces charges of obtaining money by false pretences and has pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by a Circuit Judge, granted Amporful bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified, and instructed her to report to the police every two weeks. The case has been adjourned to March 19, 2026, for a Case Management Conference.

According to the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Seth Frimpong, the complainant, nurse Dorcas Koomson Ayittey, contacted Amporful in 2020 to assist in purchasing a four-bedroom house. Amporful allegedly claimed to have secured a property in Cape Coast for $75,000, which prompted Ayittey to make a transfer that Amporful confirmed receiving.

The lawyer later introduced another property at Spintex, offered by Western View Villa Estate for $150,000, persuading Ayittey to sell the Cape Coast property, claiming it had been sold for $80,000, and requested an additional $70,000. In total, Ayittey reportedly paid $150,000.

When Ayittey traveled to Ghana in December 2024 to see the Spintex property, obtain receipts, and collect keys, Amporful allegedly refused, providing various excuses. This prompted the nurse to report the matter to police. In her caution statement, Amporful reportedly admitted the offence.

Investigations revealed that no property purchases had been made. The caretaker of the Cape Coast property confirmed that Amporful had never bought the house, and inquiries with the management of Western View Villa Estate established that no payment had been made for the Spintex property. The prosecution also noted that Amporful could not produce any documents or receipts to prove she had negotiated the property purchases on Ayittey’s behalf.
