Lands Ministry launched Investigation into galamsey extortion claims

The Government has initiated an investigation into claims of extortion and facilitation of illegal mining, widely known as “galamsey,”

The documentary alleged that some local officials were involved in enabling illegal mining operations in various parts of the country.

Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, confirmed that the probe will examine the specific allegations raised and determine whether any mining laws or regulations were violated.

“After receiving copies of the petition and related footage, a thorough investigation has commenced. The findings and any necessary actions will be communicated in due course,” Schandorf said.

He dismissed fears that those found responsible might evade punishment, asserting that the government has the political will to act. “If the current government can hold members of the National Democratic Congress accountable, it clearly has the resolve to address issues of this nature,” he added.
