The National Democratic Congress (NDC) protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled for today, September 17, following concerns raised by the party over alleged discrepancies in the 2024 voter register.
The NDC directed all its regional offices to participate in the protest after claiming that the provisional voter register showed several discrepancies, including inflated numbers in some polling stations. The party alleges that these issues are part of the EC’s plan to rig the upcoming December 7 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During a campaign rally, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah called for a nationwide protest. The party is also demanding a forensic audit of the voter register, which they believe will enhance the credibility of the election process.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public that they are fully prepared to provide security throughout the protest, as stated during a press conference on Monday, September 16.
NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, confirmed that the party is ready for the protest and warned that any unruly behavior from demonstrators would be dealt with.
National Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi reiterated on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show that the EC should agree to a forensic audit of the register if they have “nothing to hide.”
However, the EC maintains that a forensic audit is unnecessary, asserting that the discrepancies raised by the NDC are typical and will be addressed before election day.
