President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the pressing need to reinforce Ghana’s security apparatus in the wake of recent attacks on citizens, including a pirate raid at Senya Breku where 71 fishermen were robbed while returning from a fishing trip in the early hours of Thursday, February 27.
Addressing Parliament during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, February 27, he connected the incident to wider security concerns, referencing the killing of eight Ghanaians in a terrorist assault in Burkina Faso as well as the Senya Breku piracy case as clear signals that security agencies must be retooled and properly resourced.
The President praised the Ghana Armed Forces for facilitating the evacuation of victims from Burkina Faso. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Navy, Ghana Air Force, the National Security Secretariat, Awutu Senya West MP Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, the Chief Fisherman, and residents of Senya Breku for their coordinated response that led to the rescue of all 71 fishermen.
President Mahama further assured that government support would be extended to the victims, including the replacement of stolen outboard motors and other fishing equipment.

“I have directed the National Security Coordinator to support the affected fishermen and ensure the stolen outboard motors and fishing gear are replaced,” he stated.
