Ghanaian UN Peacekeepers Injured After Missile Strikes Hit Battalion Base in Southern Lebanon

Two Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations mission in Lebanon have been critically injured after missiles struck their battalion headquarters in southern Lebanon, according to a statement released by the Ghana Armed Forces. The attack occurred amid renewed exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the militant group Hezbollah, which have intensified tensions along the Lebanon–Israel border.

Military officials said the incident took place on March 6 between 5:45 p.m. and 5:52 p.m. local time when two missiles landed near the Ghanaian contingent operating under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The strikes hit facilities within the battalion’s compound, including the officers’ mess, which was reportedly destroyed by fire following the impact.

In addition to the two critically wounded soldiers, another member of the contingent was left traumatised by the attack. According to the military, the injured personnel were initially treated at a Level One medical bunker within the base and were said to be in stable condition. Arrangements are underway to transfer them to the UNIFIL headquarters referral hospital for further medical care.

Despite the attack, the Ghana Armed Forces reassured the public that the rest of the troops remain safe. Personnel stationed at the base quickly moved into underground bunkers as a precaution during the missile strikes. Military authorities described the situation in southern Lebanon as fragile but said peacekeepers have taken the necessary measures to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s government has formally protested the incident through the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Officials urged all parties involved in the ongoing hostilities to respect international obligations regarding the safety and protection of peacekeeping forces operating in the conflict zone.

Ghana has long been one of Africa’s leading contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations, with troops deployed in several missions worldwide. Its contingent in Lebanon forms part of the multinational UNIFIL force tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and helping maintain stability along the volatile border region.
