President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaian journalists to avoid spreading misinformation that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards and 75th-anniversary event in Accra on September 28, he stressed the importance of ethical reporting, urging journalists to prioritize accuracy and fairness, especially as the 2024 general elections approach. He emphasized that providing voters with factual information is crucial to ensuring informed decision-making.
Akufo-Addo encouraged journalists to act as gatekeepers of truth, ensuring that facts take precedence over falsehoods. He recognized the media’s vital role in past elections, while also warning about the dangers of fake news and sensationalism in the digital age, which can skew the electoral process.
“Every four years, Ghanaians vote to elect their leaders, and the media plays an indispensable role in that process. It is through your work that citizens learn about party policies, the integrity of candidates, and the key issues affecting their lives,” he said.
He further acknowledged the media’s contribution to monitoring elections, reporting irregularities, and amplifying the voices of voters, which has helped Ghana achieve peaceful transitions of power. However, he cautioned that the digital age presents new challenges, such as the spread of disinformation and fake news, which could distort the electoral process.
“In the age of social media, where information spreads faster than ever, journalists must rise to the occasion as gatekeepers of truth. They must ensure that facts prevail over falsehoods. As we prepare for another election cycle, I urge the media to continue their critical work by reporting with integrity, ensuring fair coverage, and delivering timely and accurate information that voters need to make informed choices.”
President Akufo-Addo underscored the high stakes for journalists to deliver accurate and balanced reporting, particularly as the country heads toward the 2024 elections.
He reaffirmed his commitment to a free and vibrant press, highlighting its essential role in safeguarding democracy in Ghana. “I remain deeply committed to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent. Your work is crucial to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation,” he concluded.
