Chaos erupted at the Kawukudi intersection in Accra when an entourage, reportedly that of the Chief Imam, forced their way through a police barricade on the 37-bound section of the road.
The police had blocked the area to allow the #StopGalamseyNow protesters to pass as they made a brief stop en route to the Kanda highway. However, some members of the Chief Imam’s entourage clashed with police officers and removed the barricades. The Chief Imam was allegedly on his way from the National Mosque to his residence.
Meanwhile, the second day of the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey protest began with high energy, as demonstrators gathered for a morale session before marching through the streets of Accra. Organized by the pressure group Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, the protest aims to raise awareness of the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Young protesters filled the air with chants, songs, and drumming, creating a lively atmosphere before the march. The demonstrators are expected to submit a petition to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources later today, Friday, October 4.
