Air Algérie has placed an order for 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes as part of its initiative to modernise its fleet and extend its route network, the airline announced on Thursday.

The transaction, highlighted in a company release reported by state news outlet APS, reflects Algeria’s effort to strengthen its civil aviation industry and enhance connectivity both domestically and internationally. Financial terms of the purchase were not revealed.
Air Algérie expects to receive five of the aircraft starting July 2026, with the remaining five set for delivery in 2027.
The carrier stated that the addition of these jets aims to enhance passenger comfort, expand capacity, and support its long-term growth strategy.
The airline also noted that the acquisition aligns with global aviation trends and is intended to boost competitiveness.
This order complements an ongoing fleet renewal programme. Previously, Air Algérie acquired 10 Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, three of which have already been delivered, and has eight Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets scheduled for 2027.
Additionally, the airline has ordered 16 ATR 72 for its domestic branch to strengthen regional connectivity within Algeria.
The expansion takes place as African carriers are increasing capacity to meet rising travel demand driven by population growth, urbanisation, and a rebound in tourism.
Despite this growth, the industry still faces hurdles such as high operational costs, limited infrastructure, and currency fluctuations in certain markets.
Air Algérie projects it will transport 9.8 million passengers in 2026, up from 8.8 million in 2025, as it scales up services and introduces new routes.
