The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, has issued a strong warning to the military, advising them to resist any form of influence from politicians or other stakeholders ahead of the December elections. He emphasized the importance of staying away from partisan politics and focusing on their professional responsibilities.
In a speech highlighting the need for peace during the election period, Major General Onwona reaffirmed the army’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and urged military personnel to remain dedicated to their duties.
He also assured Ghanaians that the army is fully prepared to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
Additionally, Major General Onwona appealed to the media to act responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation or disinformation, cautioning that such actions could threaten the country’s peace.
These remarks were made during the commissioning of a new accommodation facility for officers at the Central Command in Kumasi, a project overseen by Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command.
“I am not targeting any specific group. What I mean is that no one—whether politicians, the media, or the business community—should attempt to influence the armed forces negatively,” he said.
“We are not politicians; our role is to defend the Constitution. We will carry out our duties professionally, impartially, and neutrally. While everyone has the right to vote and express their opinion, once that is done, our focus must return to our professional responsibilities,” he added.
