Parliament Refutes Claims of Settlement Talks Between Bagbin and Akufo-Addo Over Vacant Seats

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has denied claims that he met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

On Thursday, October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared the parliamentary seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West vacant, a decision that has since been temporarily suspended by the Supreme Court, pending further review.

In response to rumors, a statement issued by Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, clarified that a video circulating on social media, allegedly showing Speaker Bagbin in a recent meeting with President Akufo-Addo, is misleading. The statement explained that the video was taken during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President and is unrelated to the ongoing parliamentary issues.

The Speaker’s office has firmly denied any negotiation between the Speaker and the President regarding the vacant parliamentary seats and called for an end to the spread of misinformation.

“Parliament states unequivocally that there is no truth in the insinuations in the circulated video. The video in question was recorded on July 4, 2024, during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President,” the statement read.

The statement also condemned attempts to misrepresent the video, calling them disingenuous and harmful to the integrity of the Speaker and Parliament.

The public has been advised to disregard the video and any false claims associated with it, and to treat the narrative with the contempt it deserves.
