Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has informed the Council of State that preparations are underway to reconvene Parliament in early November. This early recall follows a formal request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary caucus, which submitted a petition seeking an urgent resumption of legislative sessions after the Speaker’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely.
The adjournment, which temporarily halted parliamentary activities, arose from a significant dispute over which party holds the majority position. Tensions escalated when Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, leading to a deadlock that disrupted parliamentary proceedings.
The debate over the majority status has increased political tensions between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as both parties seek clarity on the issue to ensure the smooth functioning of the legislature.
During a courtesy visit from the Council of State, Speaker Bagbin reiterated his commitment to addressing these issues through constitutional and democratic means. He assured the Council that his office, in collaboration with parliamentary leadership, is working to restore legislative order.
Bagbin emphasized that reconvening Parliament in November is crucial for addressing urgent matters and implementing procedural reforms to prevent similar conflicts in the future. He also highlighted the importance of resuming parliamentary activities to resolve the majority dispute and to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The Council of State welcomed Speaker Bagbin’s reassurances, appreciating his commitment to restoring legislative operations and upholding democratic principles.
