Nii Armah Addy, a lawyer with the Centre for Social Justice, has emphasized the importance of fair judicial administration in guiding Ghana toward a prosperous future. He warned that when parts of the population perceive justice as biased, it can lead to widespread mistrust and issues with public perception.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Addy highlighted the importance of judge selection in maintaining trust in the judiciary. He suggested that, if the presence of certain judges could be seen as compromising fairness, measures should be taken to address such concerns.
He noted that while the Supreme Court has a sufficient number of judges, careful consideration is crucial in deciding which judges hear specific cases to uphold confidence in judicial decisions.
Addy also reflected on the political implications of judicial rulings, questioning how outcomes might differ if different judges were involved in certain cases. He stressed the need for the judiciary to operate transparently and consistently, especially in politically sensitive cases, to counter negative perceptions.
While acknowledging the judiciary’s overall effectiveness, Mr. Addy expressed concern that it has not met public expectations in handling political cases under the current administration.
