Free SHS Is Here to Stay; I’ll Guarantee Sustainable Funding – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will continue under his administration, with dedicated funding to ensure its longevity.

Speaking to Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama addressed concerns about the policy, dismissing rumors that he would cancel Free SHS if elected, calling such claims a “political gimmick” aimed at misleading the public.

“Free SHS has come to stay,” Mahama affirmed, emphasizing that while the program has expanded access to education, sustainable funding is crucial to its success. “We must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going.”

Mahama’s comments highlight the NDC’s commitment to Free SHS, with a focus on establishing consistent funding to address the program’s ongoing challenges.

This position follows recent affirmations from both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in support of Free SHS, though with differing perspectives on enhancing its quality and implementation.

In addition to ensuring funding, Mahama underscored the importance of quality education, stating that a well-funded program would improve educational outcomes for Ghanaian students. He assured Ghanaians that under his leadership, Free SHS would not only be preserved but also strengthened to serve future generations effectively.
