The Electoral Commission (EC) has released the final certified voter register ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections. According to the EC, a total of 18,774,159 voters are eligible to participate in the upcoming polls.
The voter register comprises three main categories:
- Biometrically Registered Voters: This group includes 18,640,811 individuals who have provided biometric data and will undergo biometric verification on election day.
- Special Voters: A total of 131,478 people fall into this category, including members of security agencies, media personnel, and EC officials. These individuals will vote early due to their responsibilities on election day.
- Voters Without Biometric Data: There are 1,870 voters whose biometric information was corrupted. These individuals will require manual verification when they cast their ballots.
In an official statement, the EC noted that logistical considerations have led to the administrative closure of certain polling stations. Some stations were closed because they did not meet the minimum voter threshold, while others were closed at the request of local communities.
To ensure that all affected voters can still participate in the election, they have been reassigned to nearby polling stations. The EC emphasized that while no register was generated for the closed polling stations—and consequently, no absent voters list was created for them—the records of 884 affected voters are securely maintained within the Voter Management System.
“Since no register was generated for these closed polling stations, no absent voters list was created for them, resulting in 884 voters excluded from the absent voters list. Their records, including details of their movement, are securely maintained within the Voter Management System, ensuring full accountability,” the EC’s statement read.
