2024 Elections: Political Parties to Sign Peace Agreement Today

The National Peace Council will convene a meeting today, Thursday, November 28, with all political parties and their presidential candidates contesting the December 7 elections to sign a peace pact aimed at ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process.

The agreement seeks to secure commitments from candidates to uphold peace before, during, and after the elections.

Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, expressed confidence in the candidates’ willingness to participate in the signing ceremony during an interview with Citi News.

“We believe all the parties will attend. They’ve received copies of the pact to review and provide feedback, and so far, no party has raised objections,” he said. Preparations for logistics and other arrangements are underway to facilitate the event.

However, uncertainty surrounds the participation of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Party Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah previously hinted at the NDC’s potential absence, citing conditions the party outlined in August for their involvement. These conditions included requiring the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General to also sign the pact.

As of now, it remains unclear whether any NDC representatives will attend the ceremony.
