Special Voting has officially commenced at selected polling stations across Ghana, marking an important step ahead of the December 7 general elections. This initiative allows key personnel involved in the election process to vote early, ensuring their availability for duties on Election Day.
The Special Voting is primarily aimed at electoral officials, security personnel, and media representatives. Approximately 131,478 individuals, or 0.007% of the total registered electorate of 18,741,159, are expected to participate today, December 2.
This exercise is taking place across 14 of Ghana’s 16 regions, excluding the Eastern and Western Regions. These two regions have been excluded due to an Electoral Commission (EC) directive to recall and reprint ballot papers after a security breach was reported. Special Voting in these regions has been rescheduled for Thursday, December 5.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, reassured the public during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting that the process would be credible and efficient. She highlighted the EC’s commitment to transparency and a free, fair election.
Special Voting will run from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at designated polling centers in the 14 regions. Eligible voters must present valid identification to participate. Unlike regular voting, ballots cast during Special Voting will not be counted on the same day. They will be securely stored and counted on December 7 at the Constituency Collation Centres. The results will be documented separately on the Presidential and Parliamentary Election Results Collation Forms and then incorporated into the final election results.
