The Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFiC) has engaged the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr. Zia Choudhury, ahead of its 10th Commemorative Anniversary Conference scheduled for October 14–15, 2026, in Accra.
The engagement, held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, focused on strengthening collaboration between GITFiC and the United Nations in the lead-up to the conference, which will centre on the organisation’s Third Global Debt Initiative and the Second AfCFTA Tertiary Students’ Congress.
The 10th Annual Meeting will be held under the theme, “Scaling GITFiC’s Global Debt Initiative: Transforming Sovereign Debt Challenges into a Catalyst for Sustainable Development and Global Economic Broad-based Prosperity.”
The meeting reviewed preparations for the anniversary conference and explored opportunities to deepen stakeholder participation and broaden the impact of discussions on sovereign debt challenges facing Ghana, Africa and other economies in the Global South.
A key focus of the engagement was the need for stronger international cooperation in developing innovative and practical approaches to addressing global debt vulnerabilities.
Mr. Choudhury expressed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the successful organisation of the conference and pledged to facilitate strategic stakeholder engagement by helping GITFiC identify and connect with relevant institutions and key participants.
He also committed the UN’s support towards media publicity and communications for the event, including the use of UN communication platforms to strengthen GITFiC’s advocacy and broaden public awareness of the Global Debt Initiative.
The two sides also discussed the importance of measuring the real-time impact of interventions and ensuring that policy discussions translate into measurable outcomes.
The GITFiC Global Debt Initiative forms part of the organisation’s Agenda 2031 and is being pursued in collaboration with the African Development Bank. The initiative seeks to promote practical policy solutions to sovereign debt challenges while encouraging improved debt management and sustainable financing.
GITFiC said stronger collaboration with the United Nations would reinforce its efforts to advance discussions on debt sustainability in Ghana, across Africa and throughout the Global South, while complementing its implementation support initiatives for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The 10th Commemorative Anniversary Conference is expected to bring together policymakers, economic and financial experts, academics, development partners, and public and private sector leaders to deliberate on innovative approaches to transforming sovereign debt challenges into opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
The conference will also provide a platform for stakeholders to examine how debt management, sustainable financing and AfCFTA implementation can contribute to broader economic development and prosperity.
Under its Agenda 2031, GITFiC is implementing initiatives focused on the Global Debt Initiative and AfCFTA, with support from selected Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The organisation said the October conference would therefore serve as an important platform for advancing practical solutions, strengthening international partnerships and building momentum around Africa’s economic transformation agenda.
