Voting in Ghana’s 2024 general elections has officially ended, with vote counting now underway across the country. The Electoral Commission (EC) has conducted multiple media briefings to update the public on the election process.
The elections were marred by various incidents, including localized violence, allegations of electoral malpractice, and confrontations between political party members and security personnel.
Reports of Violence and Arrests
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of four individuals—Majid Issah, Fodi Issiage Kamara, Yakubu Simalia, and Alhaji Bashiru Mohamed—following a shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Northern Region. The attack left one person dead and another injured.
In the Obuasi East constituency, tensions escalated when the NDC Communications Officer reportedly assaulted two military personnel attempting to access a polling center. The altercation heightened security concerns in the area.
Allegations of Electoral Malpractice
Incidents of alleged ballot stuffing and vote-buying were reported in several constituencies. At St. Theresa’s School polling station in the Okaikwei South constituency, confusion erupted when a group, purportedly linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was found with suspected fake ballots.
Moving Forward
As counting proceeds, the EC continues to assure the public of its commitment to a transparent and credible process. However, the incidents highlight the challenges of ensuring a peaceful and fair election. The nation now awaits the official results, which are expected to shape Ghana’s political future.
