An activist group that goes by the name The People’s Union is calling for an economic black out Friday as a form of protest and demonstration.
The group is asking for American consumers to not spend money for 24 hours.
The boycott is intended to quote “show them who really has power” and coming at a time where some people are protesting bigger corporations like target for rolling back DEI programs.
The effort is led by John Schwarz, a father from New York and a founder of The People’s Union
Anna Tuchman, marketing professor at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management weighing in on how this boycott is different from one’s we have seen in the past. “The call isn’t to boycott a single brand or a single retail outlet, but it’s rather calling for consumers to shut down their spending altogether,” she says.
While some believe this boycott will not have a big impact, those behind it disagrees.
“They respond to one thing money, dollars. And so many of us around the country said, well, let’s flex our dollar power. Because that is the only thing they listen to,” Father Michael Pfleger who is protesting Target adds.
Another driving factor for today’s economic black out is frustration over high prices at retailers and grocery stores.
