President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Brigadier General William Agyapong as the new Acting Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, replacing Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who has served in that role since February 1, 2024.
The appointment, which takes effect from March 24, 2025, forms part of a broader shake-up of the military’s top hierarchy, pending consultations with the Council of State.
The announcement was contained in an official statement issued on March 17, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President.
Alongside Brigadier General Agyapong, other key appointments include:
Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff
Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff
Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff
Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff
The changes follow a meeting between President Mahama and the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by General Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House.
