The Ministry of Education has released a list of 25 private senior high schools (SHSs) approved for inclusion in the 2025 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) under the Free SHS policy.
This is the first time private SHSs have been incorporated into the Free SHS programme, a move aimed at increasing access to quality second-cycle education, particularly in areas where public SHSs are over-subscribed.
The selected schools labelled under Category E are co-educational day institutions spread across all 16 regions. They offer diverse academic programmes including General Arts, General Science, Business, Technical, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Agriculture.
According to a statement from the Ghana Education Service (GES) signed by Prince Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instruction Division, the school selection deadline has been extended to Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to give candidates ample time to consider these new options.
The inclusion of these private schools is part of a pilot phase of the Free SHS policy expansion, rolled out in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS).
The initiative targets private institutions in locations where public SHSs face infrastructure challenges and cannot absorb all qualified students.
This milestone reflects the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to equity and access in education,” the statement noted. It further added that the pilot initiative will be closely monitored and evaluated for future scaling.
