Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned that Israeli airstrikes on Syria will escalate regional tensions and push the area to a “dangerous abyss.”
During a briefing on Friday, Zakharova condemned Israel’s recent attack on the coastal city of Baniyas in Syria’s northwestern Tartous province. She stated that the strikes, carried out late Monday, were justified by Israel under the pretext of targeting arms depots.
“We categorically condemn such irresponsible actions. They increase the probability of spreading the Middle Eastern conflict and push the region to a dangerous abyss,” Zakharova said.
She urged Israel to refrain from violent actions against Syria and to respect international law to avoid dramatic consequences.
Syria’s official SANA news agency quoted a military source, stating that Israeli forces conducted an “aerial aggression from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea west of Baniyas,” causing material losses.
This Israeli airstrike on Syria coincides with Israel’s ongoing violent campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of at least 38,345 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuries to another 88,295 individuals.
