The UK government says has announced £150bn in new US investments, expected to create 7,600 jobs. The pledge, unveiled during President Donald Trump’s State visit, includes major commitments from big tech firms including Microsoft and Google, Backstone, pledging to spend billions of pounds in the UK.
Backstone will provide the largest share – £90bn over the next decade, while Microsoft plans £22bn in spending and Google will invest £5bn over the next two years to expand an existing data centre in Hertfordshire.
“The investments are a testament to Britain’s economic strength and a bold signal that our country is open, ambitious, and ready to lead”. Starmer said
The investment is hoped at generating thousands of jobs in the years ahead but coming at a time domestic businesses appear to be slowing investment due to higher running costs.
UK and US investors said to meet with Starmer and Trump at Prime Minister’s country house Chequers this week for further economic deals.
