Femi Otedola, chair of FBN Holdings and majority owner of Geregu Power, has joined the ranks of prominent Nigerians supporting Aliko Dangote in his ongoing conflict with authorities over his new refinery business.
Otedola, a key figure in Nigeria’s financial and capital markets, praised Dangote’s contributions and impact both locally and globally in a post on X. He compared Dangote’s achievements to those of historical American industrialists like Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and Henry Ford, as well as modern Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani.
“In Nigeria, we have our own titans, and it is imperative that we recognize and support them. Aliko Dangote has broken every boundary in worldwide business and industry,” Otedola stated. “Supporting local champions like Dangote is crucial for our national development and economic independence. Let us continue to foster and support these visionaries who drive our nation’s progress.”
Earlier, Akinwunmi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank, also lauded Dangote, stating, “No smart investor would make a $19.5 billion investment and want it to be undermined by importers.” This was in response to allegations that Dangote is attempting to monopolize Nigeria’s fuel supply by urging regulators to block imports.
Dangote’s massive oil refinery in Lagos began operations in January, aiming to fulfill all of Nigeria’s fuel needs and supply other African markets. However, the Dangote Group has accused some international oil companies of sabotaging the refinery by either refusing to supply crude or offering oil at higher prices. Additionally, the refinery has faced scrutiny from Nigerian energy regulators, who claimed its diesel has higher-than-allowed sulfur content. Dangote refuted this by demonstrating in a laboratory test that the refinery’s diesel had lower sulfur levels compared to imported samples.
Otedola highlighted Dangote’s broader contributions, noting, “The Dangote Group often pays more in taxes than the top banks combined. If not for him, we would still be importing cement.” He also credited Dangote for building critical infrastructure, such as the Apapa Oshodi-Owonrosoki Express Road, Wharf Road, and the Obajana-Kabba Road.
