Asante Akyem North MP set to appear before Dutch court within 48 hours

The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is set to appear before a court in the Netherlands within 48 hours after being detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Authorities arrested the legislator on Sunday, May 8, over accusations relating to money laundering and alleged involvement in romance scam-related activities.

Sources close to his legal team suggest that he intends to contest the legality of both his arrest and continued detention when he is brought before the court.

Parliament was first formally notified of the arrest through a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, confirming that the legislature had been informed and was engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague for more information.

The statement further indicated that the Speaker of Parliament and parliamentary leadership are working closely with the diplomatic mission to establish full details surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akyem North.

In the meantime, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured the public that the MP is safe, in stable condition, and has not experienced any harm while in custody.
