Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Gyasehene of Sabronum, Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin, along with two other chiefs, for their involvement in illegal mining activities in the region. This action strips the chiefs of their titles and responsibilities.
The decision followed protests from the youth and residents of the area, who petitioned the Asanteman Traditional Council regarding the ongoing destruction of farmlands and water bodies caused by illegal mining.
On Monday, the Asantehene summoned the Gyasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene to the Manhyia Palace to address their participation in these illegal activities. The chiefs involved are Gyasehene of Sabronum, Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin, Akyeamehene, Nana Osei Kwadwo, and Baamuhene, Nana Tabiri Gyansah.
The Asantehene’s decision was based on a report from the National Bureau of Investigation, which he had commissioned to investigate illegal mining in Sabronum. He issued a stern warning, stating that any further involvement in illegal mining by these chiefs would result in their arrest.
This action comes after a recent outcry from the youth of Sabronum, who were disappointed when the chiefs failed to raise their concerns about illegal mining before the Asanteman Traditional Council.
A new leader has already been nominated and selected to oversee the affairs of the Sabronum community.
The Asantehene’s actions reflect his firm stance against traditional rulers within the Asante Kingdom who engage in or support illegal mining activities, following his repeated warnings on the matter.
