AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Accra Focuses on Financial Institutions and Global Debt Initiative

The third sitting of the sixth African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting has commenced in Accra, the commercial capital of Africa. His Excellency, the President of Ghana, is currently addressing the assembly. Fourteen Heads of State and Government arrived last night for today’s meeting.

Last year, GITFiC held its annual meeting at SENCHI, calling for a single currency for the African continent. During that meeting, Dr. Yeo Dossina from the African Union, along with colleagues from ECOWAS and some RECs, provided an extensive discussion on the AU Financial Institutions and their status. This morning, the President of Ghana is delivering a comprehensive report on the AU Financial Institutions and their expected impacts on the continent.

This year, GITFiC has partnered with the UN, AfDB, the Economic Commission for Africa, and others to launch a new initiative: the GITFiC Global Debt Initiative, which aims to call for a new global finance architecture with a focus on the role of credit ratings. Discussions with Zimbabwe are advanced regarding funding for the global meetings, with reassurances given at the sidelines of this ongoing event. These meetings will commence after the Sideline Forum in New York in September at the Summit for the Future. Participants from the current meeting in Accra will also attend the meeting in New York. An invitation from the Secretary-General has been received and communicated to the Director of ECA in charge of West Africa.

On the sidelines of the AU Mid-Year Meeting, the Director of ECA in West Africa and GITFiC have finalized the date for the commencement of our meeting in Accra, which will be announced to the public soon.
