The initial group of 300 evacuees had been scheduled to land in Accra yesterday.
The Ministry, however, indicated that the expected arrival was shifted due to compulsory legal requirements and logistical processes that needed to be completed.
Registration figures at the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria have since risen from 300 to 800, following a renewed surge in xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
A revised evacuation date has not yet been communicated by the authorities.
In a statement released in Accra, the Ministry explained that the scale of evacuees and South African legal protocols such as mandatory security screening, coordination among multiple agencies, and flight clearances necessitated a short postponement.
It further noted that the delay was intended to allow the High Commission to fully satisfy all required evacuation conditions.
Both countries, according to the statement, have agreed on improved and more efficient pre-evacuation arrangements to accelerate the process.
Officials also assured that every effort is being made to ensure the safe return of affected citizens, while commending them for their patience and cooperation during the process.
The Ministry added that it would keep the public informed in a timely and transparent manner, in line with government’s commitment to good governance.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had announced that the first group of 300 evacuees was expected to arrive in Accra as part of the initial phase of the operation.
Under the earlier plan, the returnees were to receive a special support package covering transport assistance, reintegration allowances, psychological care, and access to job opportunities.
Each evacuee was also expected to benefit from financial support, transport to their final destinations, and assistance to help them resettle in Ghana.
Mr. Ablakwa further indicated that they would be provided with free counselling services to help address trauma from the attacks and placed in a dedicated database to access employment and business startup opportunities.
