Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the Convener of the Democracy Hub protest, has been granted bail set at GH¢20,000 with two sureties.
Barker-Vormawor was arrested alongside 52 others on Monday, September 23, 2024, for allegedly causing public disturbances during the Democracy Hub protest. He is required to report to the police twice a week as part of his bail conditions.
He faces multiple charges, including stealing, unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public officer, and offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
Initially, Barker-Vormawor was denied bail by the Accra Circuit Court, and his appeal was also rejected by the High Court, which remanded him further. The High Court judge expressed concerns that he might commit another offence if released on bail, given that he was already on bail for treason felony charges at the time of the alleged offences. However, the judge warned that bail would be granted if the prosecution failed to begin the trial.
Following this, Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers reapplied for bail at the High Court, which was eventually granted.
