BoG to Celebrate 60 Years of the Cedi as Ghana’s Official Currency

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to mark 60 years since the Cedi became Ghana’s official currency, with celebrations set for 19 July 2025.

The Cedi was introduced in 1965 to replace the Ghanaian Pound. Since then, it has become a strong symbol of the country’s independence and economic development.

In a statement released on 13 May, the central bank said the Cedi has undergone several transformations over the decades, reflecting efforts to build a stable and resilient economy.

To mark the anniversary, the Bank will organise a series of events across the country from July to December. These will include official ceremonies, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums.

“The anniversary is a time for Ghanaians to reflect on the Cedi’s history, celebrate our achievements, and commit to protecting our currency,” the BoG said.

The Bank has invited the public and all stakeholders to participate in the upcoming events, with more details expected in the coming weeks.

The BoG reiterated its commitment to maintaining a stable Cedi and ensuring price stability as part of its broader economic mandate.
