Officers of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) have arrested a British national, Naomi Mbelu, for attempting to smuggle cannabis through Kotoka International Airport (KIA). She was apprehended on Saturday, March 22, 2025, upon arrival from Addis Ababa aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight 921.
Mbelu’s travel itinerary revealed that her journey originated from Bangkok, raising further suspicion. NACOC officers, noticing her unusual behavior, subjected her to a search, leading to the discovery of 41 black polythene-sealed parcels in her possession. A field test confirmed the substances as cannabis, with a total weight of 21.38kg.
Further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices, Joseph Asoa and Isaac Anum Sowah. Asoa is alleged to have arranged a visa-on-arrival for Mbelu, while Sowah was the driver sent to pick her up from the airport.
All three suspects have been detained as NACOC continues its investigations, with the seized drugs now in official custody. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders and warned that those involved in such illegal activities will face the full force of the law.
