The voter registration process for the 2024 elections in Cameroon has officially concluded.
According to an announcement from the Director of Elections, the registration period ended on Saturday, August 31, at 2:00 PM local time.
In the final push before the deadline, major political parties were actively working to enroll as many eligible voters as possible. Their efforts focused on maximizing voter participation by encouraging citizens to register before the cutoff.
In the days leading up to the registration deadline, parties employed various strategies to mobilize voters, including door-to-door campaigns, leaflet distributions, and extensive media and digital outreach. These efforts were aimed at ensuring that citizens aged 20 and above were registered to vote.
As of the last count by the electoral commission, over 7 million Cameroonians have registered to vote.
In July, Cameroonian lawmakers passed a bill extending their mandate by one year, effectively postponing the legislative elections originally scheduled for early 2025.
The 89-year-old President Paul Biya is expected to run in the upcoming election, with opposition leaders Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii among the key challengers set to contest against the long-serving president.
