The Centre for Democratic Movement has called on President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
The movement cites unresolved allegations related to Dr. Asiama’s role in Ghana’s financial sector crisis as a basis for its concerns about transparency and accountability.
Dr. Asiama was among nine individuals charged in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, facing charges such as fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, conspiracy to commit a crime, and violations of the Bank of Ghana Act.
These charges arose from the financial sector cleanup that led to the revocation of licenses for several financial institutions.
The Centre for Democratic Movement argues that appointing Dr. Asiama despite the withdrawal of legal charges against him raises concerns about ethical governance and political considerations.
The group asserts that restoring trust in Ghana’s financial institutions requires merit-based appointments.
The movement warns that if the appointment is not revoked, it could impact investor confidence and Ghana’s commitment to ethical governance. It has also indicated plans to petition the European Union Representative in Ghana, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank if its demand is not met.
