The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that the government is constructing 1,000 housing units to support individuals displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30, the minister underscored the government’s commitment to easing the hardships faced by the affected communities.
Oppong Nkrumah also revealed that phase two of the project, which includes the construction of an additional 1,010 housing units, has been approved, and the necessary commencement certificate has been secured. The government is currently finalizing the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition processes to begin work on this second phase.
“Already, 115 housing units are under construction, and they have surpassed 60% completion. These are the units I broke ground for in April 2024. We have also approved phase two, consisting of 1,010 units, and the commencement certificate for phase two has been received,” the minister said.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred on October 15, 2023, severely impacted communities along the Lower Volta Basin, affecting approximately 88,000 people and destroying over 5,000 homes. Nearly a year after the disaster, many victims remain displaced, and the government’s housing initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address the crisis.
