Jonathan Antwi, an Occupational Safety and Health Professional, has called for the contractor responsible for the Buduburam explosion to be held accountable for the tragic incident that claimed three lives and injured over 30 others.
The explosion, which occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024, took place during a controlled rock blast as part of the ongoing road expansion project along the Kasoa-Buduburam stretch.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Mr. Antwi raised concerns about the contractor’s failure to follow critical safety protocols, which he believes could have averted the disaster. “The contractor should be held responsible,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of adhering to the Mineral Commission’s LI 2177 Section 175, which mandates specific procedures that must be followed before any blasting operations.
Antwi’s comments reflect growing public outrage over the incident, with calls for accountability and stricter enforcement of safety regulations in construction and blasting activities.
“If the blast was conducted and investigations reveal that the required safety measures were not followed, then the contractor should be held responsible for their actions and inactions,” he added.
