Creative Arts Agency urges authorities to investigate reported assault on Ibrahim Mahama.

The Creative Arts Agency has strongly condemned the reported assault on prominent Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama in Tamale, describing it as a serious breach of human rights and a threat to artistic freedom.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 23, the Agency expressed being “deeply disturbed” by accounts that Mahama was attacked by personnel of the Ghana Police Service, stressing that no citizen should face violence or mistreatment.

“No individual, regardless of their profession or social standing, should be subjected to intimidation, brutality, or abuse by those tasked with maintaining law and order,” the statement emphasised.

The Agency highlighted Mahama’s international recognition and noted that his work continues to showcase Ghana’s cultural identity globally. It warned that incidents of this nature, if verified, could erode public confidence and compromise the secure environment necessary for creative expression.

“Ibrahim Mahama is a globally respected cultural figure whose work elevates Ghana’s creative identity internationally. Actions like this, if proven, diminish public trust and jeopardise the safe environment essential for artistic practice,” the statement added.

The Agency urged the police to carry out a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into the allegations, ensuring that any officers found responsible are held fully accountable under the law.

“We call on the Ghana Police Service to immediately initiate a thorough and transparent investigation and guarantee that all culpable officers are held accountable according to legal provisions,” the statement said.

The Agency also expressed support for Mahama and the wider artistic community, reaffirming its dedication to defending the rights and dignity of creatives.

Finally, the statement appealed for public calm and encouraged all parties to seek justice through lawful channels.
