The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has announced the Commission’s objective to declare the results of the forthcoming 2024 presidential election within 72 hours.

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr. Quaicoe emphasized that the results could potentially be released earlier, but would not extend beyond the third day following the election.

He acknowledged that achieving this timeline hinges on the cooperation and support of all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

“We anticipate that the results will be available within 72 hours. However, it could be announced within 24, 48, or 72 hours, depending on the level of collaboration and support,” he stated on Tuesday.

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Dr. Quaicoe observed that the EC’s commitment to announcing results within 24 hours led to unwarranted requests for recounts and re-collation.

He suggested that certain parties may have intentionally obstructed the Commission’s efforts to meet its ambitious timelines, resulting in delays and additional procedures.

Dr. Quaicoe underscored the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and prompt declaration of results in the upcoming elections.

He urged all involved parties to collaborate effectively to prevent unnecessary delays and disruptions in the electoral process.

This announcement comes as the Electoral Commission prepares for the 2024 elections, placing increased emphasis on efficiency and transparency.

The Commission aims to bolster public trust in the electoral process by establishing clear expectations regarding the timeline for result declaration.

Dr. Quaicoe further revealed extensive collaboration between the EC and the police as part of preparations for the upcoming 2024 elections.

He explained that, by law, the police service is responsible for all security activities during elections. However, due to limited manpower, they often collaborate with other security forces to enhance their efforts.

“We engage extensively with the police, coordinating election security task forces and conducting briefings to outline EC’s plans,” Dr. Quaicoe stated.
