The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned Ghanaian leaders to take heed of recent events in Kenya, emphasizing the importance of preparing diligently for the upcoming crucial election on December 7.
He noted that the situation in Kenya bears similarities to Ghana’s context and urged leaders, including Members of Parliament, to ensure that the elections are free, fair, and transparent.
Mr. Bagbin mentioned that he has contacted key stakeholders, such as the chairpersons of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice. He also plans to engage with President Akufo-Addo to help ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, Bagbin stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to protect Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections.
“People often take many things for granted, including my colleagues in Parliament, but the events in Kenya could happen here. We are not different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya, so we must take preventive measures. We need to ensure that the person Ghanaians choose to lead the country is rightfully elected. I will do everything I can to ensure that no one perceives my actions as partisan,” he stated.
