Foreign ministers of Russia and Libya engage in talks in Moscow

Moscow has signaled its willingness to support Libya in efforts to “restore unity and national reconciliation,” according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who made the remarks on Tuesday after discussions with Libya’s acting foreign minister, Taher Al-Baour.

Al-Baour, in turn, stated that the Libyan delegation intends to engage Russian government officials with the aim of reviving existing bilateral agreements.

He added that Libya hopes to hold meetings with various Russian state institutions to restart suspended contracts and agreements, while also exploring the possibility of signing new deals.

A broader economic cooperation framework is set to be revived.

Lavrov confirmed that both countries have agreed to reactivate their Intergovernmental Commission.

He noted that Russia will explore ways to help its companies return to the Libyan market through this platform, facilitating renewed economic engagement between the two sides.

The meeting also included Russia’s trade minister, highlighting the economic focus of the discussions.

On the subject of Iran, Lavrov commented on ongoing negotiations with the United States, saying that a successful outcome similar to the 2015 nuclear agreement would represent a significant achievement if both parties reach consensus.
