Isaac Amoo, Board Chairman of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), has issued a firm directive to the agency’s staff, warning them not to participate in the nationwide strike organized by Organised Labour.
Speaking at a staff event at GMet’s headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, October 9, Mr. Amoo stressed that any employee who joins the strike should “consider themselves sacked.” He highlighted the critical nature of the agency’s work, which supports national security by providing essential weather data for industries such as aviation, agriculture, and emergency services.
His warning comes just ahead of the nationwide strike, scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Organised Labour and its allied unions initiated the strike to pressure the government into taking strong action against illegal mining, or “galamsey,” which has caused severe environmental damage, including pollution of water bodies and forest reserves.
Mr. Amoo emphasized GMet’s crucial role in protecting lives and property through accurate weather forecasts and urged staff to prioritize their responsibilities over the strike.
“GMet is part of the essential services of this country,” Amoo declared. “On behalf of the board and leadership of this agency, I want to make it clear that GMet does not approve any of its workers to join the nationwide strike. Any employee who defies this directive should consider their employment terminated.”
