GBC Director Must Clarify 2024 African Games Payment Controversy – PAC Chairman

PAC Chairman James Klutse Avedzi has stated that the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, must provide further clarification regarding the controversy surrounding the 2024 All African Games payment.

This follows Prof. Alhassan’s challenge to the Sports Minister’s claim that $3.6 million was paid to GBC for covering the Games. Prof. Alhassan asserted on GTV that the broadcaster only received $105,000, which was meant to support GBC’s decision to dedicate an entire channel to the event, suspending regular programming.

“I was shocked to hear the Minister of Youth and Sports claim that GBC received over $3 million. I assure the public that GBC’s total benefit from the African Games was $105,000—nothing more was paid,” Prof. Alhassan said, explaining that the payment was for dedicating GTV Sports Plus to the Games.

However, the Sports Ministry has demanded an apology from Prof. Alhassan for implying that the Minister misled the public. Jamaludeen Abdullah, Executive Assistant to the Sports Minister, accused Prof. Alhassan of deliberately confusing Ghanaians about the financial transactions between the Ministry and GBC.

PAC Chairman Avedzi has now called on Prof. Alhassan to provide a full explanation to clarify the matter. He suggested that if the Director-General had explained that the entire $3.6 million was received but some was transferred to a third party, it would have resolved the issue. Avedzi emphasized the need for both GBC and the Sports Ministry to reconcile the figures and inform the public.
