The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has denied claims that it received $3 million from the Ministry of Youth and Sports as full payment for covering the 13th All African Games.
The state broadcaster called the allegation “shocking” and completely false.
GBC’s Director General, Professor Amin Alhassan, clarified in an interview that the corporation only received $105,000 for its coverage of the games, which took place in Ghana from March 8-23, 2024.
The claim was made by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, during a Public Accounts Committee hearing on Monday, August 19. Ussif stated that GBC, as the official broadcaster of the games, had received full payment, allegedly exceeding $3 million.
However, Prof. Alhassan refuted this, assuring the public that the GBC’s total benefit was $105,000. He explained that this amount was provided to support the corporation’s decision to dedicate an entire channel, GTV Sports+, exclusively to the All African Games for two weeks, thereby suspending normal programming.
Prof. Alhassan further elaborated that the payment was intended to offset the opportunity cost incurred by the corporation due to the channel’s temporary suspension of regular programming, resulting in a loss of business revenue.
