Ghana aims to achieve 70% nationwide 5G coverage by 2027.

A directive has been issued to the National Communications Authority to fast-track the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, with a goal of reaching 70 percent population coverage by Ghana’s 70th Independence Day in 2027.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary launch of the Communications Authority of Ghana in Accra on Wednesday, February 25, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed that Cabinet has adopted a decisive policy to broaden access to 5G technology nationwide.

He indicated that the ministry will soon provide formal guidance to the regulator to begin preparations for a spectrum auction, which is expected to be held in the coming weeks. The NCA will supervise both the wholesale framework and the newly introduced network-led operations to deliver the 70 percent coverage objective.

“Our vision is to attain 70% 5G population coverage by the 70th independence celebration of our country next year. The responsibility now lies with the regulator. You have less than a year to deploy 5G under both the wholesale and network-led models and reach this target,” the Minister stated.

Although he described the timeline as ambitious, George expressed strong confidence in the NCA’s capacity and resilience to accomplish the task.
