Ghana calls in South African envoy over reported xenophobic violence

Ghana has formally summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, following recent reports of xenophobic attacks affecting foreign nationals, including Ghanaian citizens, in what authorities describe as a rising diplomatic concern over the protection of its people abroad.

During a meeting held on Thursday, April 23, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed deep displeasure over viral videos showing alleged harassment and intimidation. He described the incidents as unacceptable and said they undermine the dignity and safety of those targeted.

A key case raised involved an incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted, asked to prove his immigration status, and told to leave South Africa while being advised to “fix his country.” Ablakwa warned that such treatment violates the rights of lawful residents and could heighten tensions if not addressed.

He further indicated that the situation may be escalating, with reports suggesting some foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, have been advised to stay indoors for their own safety. While no deaths have been reported in the current wave of incidents, he cautioned that similar past occurrences have previously led to fatalities and property destruction.

Ghana has therefore submitted a formal protest, calling on South African authorities to act swiftly, ensure the protection of foreign residents, prevent further incidents, and give clear guarantees that such behaviour will not be repeated.

The minister also highlighted that the attacks contradict the spirit of African solidarity, referencing Ghana’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle under Kwame Nkrumah, and stressing that such actions strain long-standing diplomatic relations.

Responding to the concerns, the Acting High Commissioner said the issues had been noted and assured that the South African government is taking steps to manage the situation.

He added that security agencies are closely tracking developments in an effort to restore order and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to protecting its citizens overseas, stating that it will continue engaging South African authorities until full safety assurances are provided.
